The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
