The renowned publisher has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last fall.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed employees about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the need for a clearer direction.
The president expressed that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
The news echoes a similar move taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.
Below is the entire message from Ismailer's communication:
Team—
I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a message, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the feedback to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in this project increases every day. To advance the outstanding advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce Ben Brinkman as the new Lead of 31st Union. Following a period of conversations, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
His leadership and background in the PVP shooter genre is considerable, having dedicated the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most popular franchises in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in receiving him next week. We are all excited to continue witnessing the progress of Project ETHOS in the weeks to come.
David
Brinkman currently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at other industry leaders.
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year together with a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union presented the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary states. "Face the opponents with unique powers, stakes, and challenges that change every round. Will you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Alternatively take a risk, risk it all, and trust your squad can secure victory? The choice is up to you."
The game has not yet received an official launch window or platforms, but players can look forward to additional details as creation advances.
